Crystal Clear explores future feelings, premonitions, myths and dreams. The exhibition reflects on essential questions addressing how we anticipate a different kind of future through our memories, fantasies and delusions. The future tense is a vessel through which we convey our expectations, intentions, and prophecies about what is yet to come. How do we confront our current state and navigate the present as we approach our dreams ––how do these images manifest into realities? What are the compromises and alternatives to consider? In order to interfere and disrupt preconceived notions and tensions, we invite artists to experiment and explore the collective social contexts and visions in their own terms and aesthetics. The works selected are a collection of valuable archival material for the future that serve as evidence of our presence and an epilogue to our history. As we connect and engage with these archives we aim to foreground the contradictory ways and categories that separate us. Recognising these interruptions appears a crucial way forward so that an alternative image could perhaps be seen.
Crystal Clear, translated as الصفاء والنقاء والشفافية is a term that emphasises clarity, transparency and the clear possibilities of the many narratives of our shared aspirations. The works in the exhibition vary from newly commissioned work to previously made work that has been adopted, adapted and altered with the intention to consider the possibility of re-engaging with history and imagining another reality through active confrontations.
This exhibition anticipates and questions various futures which also evokes the ways memory and feeling can be manipulated, controlled, forgotten, or remembered. Anticipating a future that does not yet exist provides a space to dream and speculate what could happen and what is bound to happen. We are asking to imagine a reality that has not happened before— a world where our roots reach above the soil and into the sky.
The image is our forefront. The image is Crystal Clear.
